For those that kinda know me, you know I like to do lots of things. Depends on the day, depends on the hour on what I'm working on. I'll go through phases when all I want to do is dye fabric, and then I'll go through phases where all I want to do is make soap. And then sometimes all I will want to do is knit, knit, knit. I've learned not to fight it. Well, I'm *learning* not to fight it.
In our quest to live better and eat better, the veggie quotient is at an all-time high. A few weeks ago I tried kale for the first time EVER and I am in LOOOOOOOVE. I know, it's a sickness. Don't judge. :D Produce is *so* delicious right now, and when it's home-grown it's even better. Sadly, I'm waiting not-so-patiently for my own tomatoes to come in. Some of my plants are literally 8 feet long and draping all over the place....and the tomatoes are just *starting* to do something. So, before I went to the "real" grocery store, I stopped at a little parking lot that is dubbed the farmer's market, which is funny because only one old guy sells there ususally. I think they should rename it THE Farmer Market. :D
There were a couple of farmers yesterday, and I picked up a few tomatoes, some collards (I'll let you know how those are...another first for me!), and zucchini. Across the street from the Farmer(s) Market is a little collection of shops. A friend of mine told me I should go for the gusto and rent a space there, but I've just never made the time to go in, and yesterday I did. What I found was a neat little collection of "storefronts" with half-walls in between each store. There was great little stores selling purses and and hats, a coffee shop, a flower market, a leather artist, and....a space with quilts. Oh, how I love serendipity!
You see, more than dyeing, more than sewing, more than knitting, I've been making soap. And while I *love* to make soap, sometimes when I'm transporting soap from the saponifactory to the curing room, I catch a glimpse of my sewing area. Could the machines be making a sad face at me? Are they pouting? Lonely? At the very least, they're collecting dust and that's not good! As I walked the floor with the manager of the building, viewing the available spaces I knew that this was probably not the right space for me and my soap, and it probably wasn't the time for me to have a retail storefront all my own anyway, I mentioned the quilts to her. And her face went from all business to delight, and let me in on a little secret: There's a quilter's club that meets there....WEEKLY! On Thursday nights...no experience necessary, and there is no blood oath! So, we talked more about quilting and less about business and even though the space isn't what I was originally looking for, I think I may have found a nice little corner of the world to create some quilts and perhaps find some folks that have admitted to their own fabric addiction. :D Stay tuned.

In other news, I think I have found a clue as to why I don't blog as much as I should. During this writing my almost-two and -four year olds were quietly playing with toys. At some point, they went from quietly playing with toys to quietly using an entire box of Rice Krispies to make a mommy mine-field on the kitchen floor. Crunch-crunch-crunch. Awesome.

Cool Running!
I've decided to start running again in earnest...before I wake up one day with cankles. Today was three miles (go, me!) but it may have been the toughest three miles ever. And I will probably be paying for it later, but right now I feel pretty darn good.
Do you ever feel like sometimes you've fallen asleep at the wheel? No, not literally...but how sometimes you get into the daily grind of things and you wish there were more hours in the day, because there is an insurmountable list of things to do? So, in an effort to "get more done" you start cutting corners and cutting out the unnecessary?
Everyone's idea of unnecessary is different, and for me I found makeup unnecessary years ago. No biggie, right? Makeup is now *special occasion* only! :D I've probably saved myself dozens of hours of primping already! Hair dyeing and hair products were the next thing to go, and I've embraced the gentle greying that's probably been sneaking up on me for a while now. But anyway, I'm more natural. More earthy-crunchy, and I may be better off for it.
Letting go of some things is good, but letting go of some other things is BAAAAAAAD. Like I started cooking without a purpose. Cooking whatever is handy. Whatever is convenient. Just, whatever. I'll say this: we were stopping just short of convenience food, just short of take out...but it was getting pretty bad. Pretty mundane. BLEH. And all the while, I was telling myself we're not doing too bad, because while I sit here and type, I can see that my wrists are still as dainty as ever, and I can still see the bones in my feet and ankles.
I would like to note, however, that while you're sitting at your computer it is vitually impossible to check the status of your heiny. Until it starts to spread. ZOMG...how did I let this happen? I was asleep at the wheel....that's how it happened.
So, I may post numbers now and again about my health and successes, but don't expect to see an exact number from my scale. Not that I'm hiding it, it's just a number that is unimportant. Just like counting calories...I'd sooner poke my eye out with a sharp stick than know to the nearest hundred how many calories are in Mediterranean Salad. But fun numbers like how fast and how far, you know? That's the kind of thing I want to gauge.

OMG...I'm so embarrassed...
JANUARY? It's been since JANUARY that I've posted? UGH.
I'm really a responsible adult...a contributing member of society. Heck, I even type 60+WPM. Why, oh why, do I not blog? It's not like I don't rev up the computer most days. It's not like my browser cache is cleared, and I can't find my way back here...what gives? I dunno. Note to self: Check out Cake Wrecks asap...there's got to be a whole ton of funny I've missed for the past few months. But I digress.....
I kinda *do* know why blogging falls by the wayside. It has to do with the breezy way I do things. I *am* productive most of the time, but it's in kind of a weird, procrastinator kind of way. (Big shout out to my dad here. I'm sure it's genetic.) I find life fascinating in all sorts of ways...and sometimes it takes me on a wandering path. Like, for example....did you know you could learn to knit from YOU TUBE??? I had no idea, until this past winter. And then I became obsessed....OBSESSED, I say!! I searched for keywords like knit and purl, and then made some really wonky hats. Ones with random "air conditioning" holes trailing up the side of the hat. Who knew that when knitting in the round, you don't have to knit-purl-knit-purl....you could just knit-knit-KNIT-knit-KNIT-knit...knitknitknitknitknit. I didn't at first....but then, with the wonders of You Tube, I learned you could. And then I learned other things, too...each time "the hard way" and I think I reknit each thing twice...sometimes 3 times. I was triumphant when I taught myself how to do Linen Stitch, only to find out that no....that's not Linen Stitch...it's Moss Stitch, only to find out that I was accidently right in the first place because Moss Stitch is *so* much more scrubby than Linen Stitch, and I am now an expert kitchen cloth maker. :D Because kitchen cloths don't care if you get bored in the middle and change to something different, it looks like you did it on purpose. Not so much on a pair of longies. I'm just guessing there, though...I haven't quite made it to the longies yet. But I *do* have a sunhat started. That will be done by, ohhhhh....November....
So, anyway...I'm in love with life. Knitting is just one small example.
I begged a friend to make some longies for my girl what seems like eons ago, and I *seriously* thought I'd never touch yarn again, because of the horrible knots I made with the yarn I dyed. Just goes to show with time, things change. And a certain skill level of expertise isn't permanent. Thank goodness for that!
Um, that was kinda random huh? :D
What have I been up to? Well starting closest to furthest...June was a virtual revolving door of guests and family at our house. Very fun, lots of cooking, BBQ'ing, beer, and beach. Things are starting to settle down from that finally. Before that, we did some gardening and landscaping...by HAND! I can tell I'm older and wiser because I *started out* with gloves, instead of trying to put them on after my fingers were all cut up and my palms tender from all the manual labor. If anyone is close by, we will be having a TON of tomatoes soon. The really, really ugly bumpy kind that taste delicious! :D If the plants weren't draped all over, they'd be 8 feet tall, I swear! Before that, some soapy coops, some dye, some yarn, and a dream to knit socks. If you're ever in the market for Addi Turbo needles, I got a great deal at Kangaroo UK. The shipping was amazingly cheap. And size zero (U.S.) is very, very tiny. Microscopic.
So, some great gals at Hyenacart clued me in to the fact that it's been a little while since I blogged. I had no idea anyone even read my stuff. :D I really should blog more...the masses are counting on me!!!
I PROMISE (with the best of intentions) I will tell of my adventures of cleaning up my diet soon....very soon! Because it's informative as well as funny. And if I don't do it soon, very soon....someone poke me so I remember!

The Catch-All Blog Post
Heh.
For those of you interested in *only* dye, *only* soap, *only* quilts....you're going to have to wade through some stuff to get your fix. I think about blogging frequently. Usually when I'm not at my computer. And then I forget to do it, usually because a lot has been going on. So, in no particular order....what I've been doing for the past 4 months....
The Giant Dharma Order
My hubby teaches middle school, and in a weak moment I agreed to come to school with him and teach a chemistry lab on exactly how fiber-reactive dye works. Except I had to research EXACTLY how fiber reactive dye works. Oh, and get together one hundred shirts for all his students, plus or minus a few for teachers. And mix dye. And make a powerpoint. OMG, what was I thinking? Well, I'm sure I was thinking the kids would love it, it would turn out awesome, and everyone would have a great snazzy new tee shirt to remember the lab. And it's true...all of that happened. We were so busy DURING the lab though, I forgot to take a bunch of pictures. We have some after shots I may post later. We're going to try and get them all together this week to take a great big group shot. We'll see. I promised them all Rice Krispy treats...I'm such a sucker. So, that was a HUGE event that took up a lot of time in November/December. I loved it though. The kids were great, and for the most part I think they're happy with their work. Oh, and if you ever have to order textiles, dye, yarn, whatever? The Dharma folks are the go-to people. They seriously rock.
www.dharmatrading.com/
Along with the chemistry dye-fest, I did a few orders here and there for folks. A family of rainbow tie-dyes, a few shirts to go with longies with colorways I'd never seen in the flesh, some rockin' tye-dye sheets for one of my favorite customers, which inspired me to do a set for my own teenage daughter. All turned out well. At some point I stopped wearing gloves all the time, and dyed my hands a lovely shade of green black. Heh. But it came off.
Dyed some cotton bamboo yarn to send off to a knitter to knit some hats for Christmas, which turned out awesome. I liked how the dye turne out, but WOW....when it was made into something? These ladies turn things into MAGIC. Love it. If you've ever dyed cotton/plant fiber, you know that it takes FOREVER to wash the excess dye out. Out of habit, I started googling how wool was different, and it seems if you do it right....WOOL IS WAY EASIER TO DYE. So, I've gotten some wool yarn with the help of Candypants yarn and will be working on that sometime in January. My first thought was to just dye some yarn and send it off to someone to make something beautiful, which is still the plan. But then I thought, if I'm going to dye, shouldn't I know HOW it works? So, I bought some basic needles and learned the basic knit-purl. Wow. What fun. It's relaxing. And I may make something other than a really long scarf someday....but for now, I know what dyed yarn looks like both BEFORE and AFTER it's knit. Awesome.
So, dyed a little more cotton to practice some more (and use up some leftover dye from the Chemistry Shirtfest) and I'm pretty much caught up with things I've committed to dye.
SEWING FUN
Haven't done as much as I'd like, but the sewing machine has been a-running too! Did a couple quilts for friends, one in ATL and one in Canada. Such fun. My first love. I'll be doing a few more quilts in the new year for people, we'll see how those go. Every one I do I love for a different reason. Did a few skirts as a guest slot at Kobieta . I hope to do a few more LWI skirts soon...perhaps with some embroidery embellishment. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't even fired up the embroidery machine this season. Oops. Finally got around to some jammie pants for my little guy, and they're so cute. I did them in flannel, thinking they'd be so cozy and nice....but I think I'm not a fan of flannel. Plain cottonish things from now on. Tried to make some jammie pants for myself, and realized I should have taken my measurements first. OOPS. Hubby is especially happy with his new jammie pants though. Other than that, I've been organizing my sewing stuff so I can find things better. I need to come up with a better system other than "fold and put in a pile".
SOAP
Oh, how I love thee...let me count the ways! I know I promised to talk about this months and months ago, but really...I almost overcommitted myself with all the projects I've taken on! All told, between two groups of folks I sent out 300+ bars. It was so much fun. They're loving homemade soap as well, or so I'm told. If they're anything like me, soap was like this mysterious thing, that couldn't be done by mere mortals. And even on it's worst day, IMHO, homemade soap beats the pants off store-bought soap. So, I learn more and more each day about oils, soap, etc etc...it's really endless. Hats off to my hubby, who's been so supportive and so willing to experiment. And use girlie scented soaps if that's what's around. He's cool like that.
I started off trying to do colors in several soaps, and it just doesn't do a whole lot for me. Maybe it will grow on me, I dunno. Maybe if I get better at mixing, swirling, etc it will. I really enjoy a nice ivory, vanilla, brown, or tan, solid colored bar. I do like looking at others' artistry though. Some folks really have the knack for the vibrant swirl. Go, you! I'll keep oohing and aahing over those. I just don't have the gumption to experiment with color right now.
Upcoming things...geez, I dunno....I do a little soap every couple weeks. For awhile there, I was doing soap every weekend, all weekend for a couple months. I'm faster at it now, so the same amount of soap could probably be condensed into one day, but I'm not committed to the sort of volume I was...now, it's just inventory. Sewing-wise? I'm going to start a quilt soon, and just a few things for the kids. Dyeing yarn. And I don't know...goofing off? Doing more soap? I'm going to focus on some yoga-type things, so I don't want to get too many things going. We'll see.
Oh, and I bought a pasta attachment for my Kitchenaid. Let me just say, fresh pasta is THE best!!!

Bloggity Blog Blog Blog
Still working on being consistent with the blog. Bear with me!
The custom dyeing was great, fun, wowwee, awesome. And OMG, a lot of work. It's different when you're dyeing to specs, versus dyeing just because you feel like having a little color in your life that day. The feeling of "Geez, I hope they like it!" is overwhelming. When I just dye to dye it's more like "Ooooohhh...I love the way that turned out!!!" and hope someone else does, kwim?
Dyed some bamboo/cotton yarn as well to start up the homemade Christmas theme. This is the second 8 ounces that I've twirled into a knot. This one is not so bad, but I'm scared to work on the last 8 ounces. LOL! I've said it before, and I'll say it again...hats off to you yarn dyers out there. I just don't think that's my bag. :D
Hmmmm...the zippers that were begging to be put in started begging for mercy. The one turned out so wiggly and ugly I took it out again. That dress may not be done until spring. Probably just in time for Madi to wear it, instead of putting it on the market. Ahhh, well. At least I like the fabric. The coral Carnaby Street floral/scrolls. So pretty!
KJ (my teenager) has been BUGGING me for a dress in the AH Baddanna fabric for freakin' ever. And now, the first day of school is approaching (on Monday) and it's finally DONE! YAY!!! And the zipper is lovely on it. Just need to put a hook-and-eye and call it good. It's lovely. Fits like a glove. Now, I just hope some you-know-what doesn't send her home for "displaying colors". Heh. My honor student...a lil gangster. We'll see.
I'm doing mama skirts next if it kills me.
Oh, and have some LS shirts in the works to dye. Heh. I just can't get enough. DH has asked me to help him with a lab so his students can learn about acids and bases and tie dye themselves. OMG, what have I gotten myself into???
